Description: Large fragment from a very large tablet inscribed with an account of grain. Portions of seven columns are preserved on the obverse; the reverse is completely destroyed. How much of the complete tablet is missing is uncertain. Quantities of barley are listed, followed by "kišib PN," with PN sometimes provided with a patronymic and/or a professional designation. Most likely "kišib" (seal, sealed tablet) indicates that the invidual received the grain in question, and thus the quantities of barley represent expenditures. It is possible that the tablet, when complete, had the form of a "balanced account." Traces of subtotals are preserved in columns vi and vii, in both instances following a blank space. Although Oriental Institute records assign a provenience from Adab, this fragment certainly comes rather from Girsu, based on the tablets dimensions, the genre, and the quantity of grain listed (for which no parellels from Adab are known), and based on the preponderence of typical Lagash names, invoking deities like Bau and Ningirsu. Furthermore, certain speicfic individuals, with patronymic or professional designation, are otherwise attested only on Girsu tablets, including: Ur-{d}Ba-u2 dumu Ha-ba-zi-zi; Ur-DUN ma2-lah5 gal; Ur-{d}Nanše dumu Ur-{d}Ba-u2; Gu3-de2-a dumu UN.IL2; Nam-ḫa-ni ugula UN.IL2; Nam-ha-ni dumu Hu-wa-wa; Lu2-kiri3-zal dumu Ur-nigin3-gar. Some other noteworthy entries include: in col. iv: kišib Ba-a dub-sar-bi; kišib Ur-{d}Ba-u2 pisan-dub-ba uš-bar. In all likelihood, the fragment was purchased by Banks while excavating at Adab, having been looted from Girsu.
